Paediatric Hematology - Oncology at MMHRC is a division of the Department of Paediatrics, established in January 2010. Its mission is to provide comprehensive care with state-of-the-art facilities, to all children with cancer and blood disorders. This division is backed by support and excellent cooperation from the various departments including Radiology, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Medical, Radiation and Surgical Oncology; and various subspecialties of surgery - including Neurosurgery, GI surgery, Urology, Cardiothoracic surgery, Orthopaedics; and various other services in the hospital such as clinical laboratory services, blood bank etc. The centre has trained and dedicated specialists in order to deliver optimum care to the patients, in a child-friendly environment.
Inpatient facilities consist of 24 beds, each in single rooms (including 10 special rooms with attached bath rooms)
Day Care facilities include 6 beds for chemotherapy infusions and transfusions
Procedure room with anaesthesia support for procedures like intrathecal chemotherapy and bone marrow aspirate/biopsy
Pediatric ICU/post-operative ward with 8 beds (common to general paediatrics and paediatric oncology)

The types of childhood cancers treated at MMHRC include
- Brain tumours
- Wilms’ tumour
- Bone tumours
- Germ cell tumours
- Liver tumours
We take great pride in the fact that we are able to treat all children with cancer regardless of their paying capacity thanks to the generous support from the Camila Children’s Cancer Fund. This charitable fund helps the underprivileged to pay for expensive medications and laboratory tests. MMHRC remains committed to providing free services to the poorest
The types of blood disorders we treat include inherited blood disorders like Thalassemia and haemophilia.
We also treat acquired blood disorders including immune and non-immune thrombocytopenias and various types of anaemias and neutropenia syndromes.
Platelet pheresis is offered by our blood bank.

A hematopoietic stem cell transplant service for adults and children will be established by the end of 2012.
For out-station children we provide night-accommodation in our Day Care Ward, for those undergoing daily radiation treatments.
We hope to start a Postgraduate training program in paediatric hematology-oncology in January 2013.
