Paediatric Oncology

Paediatric Hematology - Oncology at MMHRC is a division of the Department of Paediatrics, established in January 2010. Its mission is to provide comprehensive care with state-of-the-art facilities, to all children with cancer and blood disorders. This division is backed by support and excellent cooperation from the various departments including Radiology, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Medical, Radiation and Surgical Oncology; and various subspecialties of surgery - including Neurosurgery, GI surgery, Urology, Cardiothoracic surgery, Orthopaedics; and various other services in the hospital such as clinical laboratory services, blood bank etc. The centre has trained and dedicated specialists in order to deliver optimum care to the patients, in a child-friendly environment. 



  • Inpatient facilities consist of 24 beds, each in single rooms (including 10 special rooms with attached bath rooms)
  • Day Care facilities include 6 beds for chemotherapy infusions and transfusions
  • Procedure room with anaesthesia support for procedures like intrathecal chemotherapy and bone marrow aspirate/biopsy
  • Pediatric ICU/post-operative ward with 8 beds (common to general paediatrics and paediatric oncology)


The division consists of three physician members:
  • Dr. S. Jayabose, MBBS, DCH, AB Ped, AB Ped. Heme-Onc. - Director of the division and senior consultant
  • Dr. R. Priya, MBBS, AB Ped. - Junior Consultant
  • Mrs. J. Jemima -  Chemotherapy Nurse
  • Mrs. P. Sundaravalli - Nurse in charge, Paediatric oncology inpatient service
  • Miss. M. Usha - Administrative assistant and social worker
  • Miss. P. Preetha - Social worker
  • Miss. S. Ambika - Ward Secretary

The types of childhood cancers treated at MMHRC include

  • We take great pride in the fact that we are able to treat all children with cancer regardless of their paying capacity thanks to the generous support from the Camila Children’s Cancer Fund. This charitable fund helps the underprivileged to pay for expensive medications and laboratory tests. MMHRC remains committed to providing free services to the poorest
  • The types of blood disorders we treat include inherited blood disorders like Thalassemia and haemophilia.
  • We also treat acquired blood disorders including immune and non-immune thrombocytopenias and various types of anaemias and neutropenia syndromes.

Specialized Services

  • Platelet pheresis is offered by our blood bank.
  • Those interested in donating platelets by pheresis for children with cancer are requested to call the Blood Bank or Paediatric hematology oncology at 9855481111.
  • A hematopoietic stem cell transplant service for adults and children will be established by the end of 2012.
  • For out-station children we provide night-accommodation in our Day Care Ward, for those undergoing daily radiation treatments.
  • We hope to start a Postgraduate training program in paediatric hematology-oncology in January 2013.

Conferences Organized

First annual conference on childhood cancer was held on Jan 7th, 2011. It was presided over by the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

  • Conference in Paediatric Haematology-Oncology, organized by Child Trust Hospital in December 2010
  • PaediCon 2011. Annual meeting of the haematology-oncology chapter of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, at Nagpur in November 2010.
  • RGCON at New Delhi, organized by Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute February 4th to 6th 2011.
  • Jiv Daya Foundation conference in March 2011 at New Delhi.
