The MMHRC Blood Bank is a vast and sensitive department. It is responsible for saving the lives of patients in critical situations, without any delay. The staff ensures that every unit of blood leaving our department is safe for our patients.

Our essential functions are donor motivation, blood collection from the appropriate donor, screening of donor blood, processing & preparing the blood & blood components, proper storage of blood & blood components and timely supply of these components to the patients.

We follow standard and accepted procedures while testing for compatibility. All our tests are cross-checked and meticulously documented. Equipment used in the Blood Bank is calibrated and maintained regularly while the Reagents used are subject to frequent quality tests.

  • Creating awareness about Voluntary Blood Donation.
  • Motivating the Blood Donors (Both voluntary donors & relatives of patients)
  • Stringent selection criteria for blood donors.

  • Issuing safe blood & its components to the patients, based on their needs. (Both for in-patients and other outside Hospitals).

Specialized Services

Hemapheresis (Apheresis)

Haemapheresis (or) Apheresis is the collection of anticoagulated whole blood from a donor, its separation into components, retention of desired component and return of remaining constituents to the donor. It is also useful to remove unwanted component (antibodies in the plasma) from the donor. This technique is useful for harvesting components like platelets, plasma and even to collect peripheral blood stem cells.

Therapeutic Use

The cell separator can be used in various conditions,

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)
  • Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome(HUS)
  • Guillian Barre Syndrome
  • Auto immune Hemolytic Anaemia
  • In Haemophilic patients with F VIII inhibitors
  • Walden stroms macroglobinemia
  • Plasmapheresis may be effective in familial hypercholesterolemia to reduce cholesterol and LDL.

Coombs Test

It is done to detect the presence of autoantibodies in the patient’s blood.
ICT - Indirect Anti Human Globulin Test
DCT - Direct Anti Human Globulin Test

Conferences Organized

  • We organize a conference every year on October – 1st (National Blood Donor day).
  • The aim of the conference is to create awareness about the importance of blood donation.
  • The conference also provides a platform to recognize, honour and praise the voluntary blood donors from the college and from the voluntary donors association.

Conferences Attended

Dr. S. Ravi and Dr. S. Manikandan attended the Transcon (ISBTI) Conference at Hyderabad, from November 12th to 14th 2010
