The department of Paediatrics & Neonatology at MMHRC has seen a steady growth over the years. As a tertiary and referral centre we provide excellent service to many complicated cases that are referred to us. Paediatric patients are monitored by qualified paediatricians, who are available round the clock. Through our dedicated services, state-of-the-art equipment and experienced doctors, we have acquired a good reputation for diagnosing and treating all types of paediatric cases.

General paediatrics consists of a separate emergency cum procedure room which is equipped with critical care resuscitation trolley, suction apparatus, centralized oxygen supply, intubation sets, emergency drugs, nebulizers, cardiac monitor, pulse oxymeter infusion pumps etc.

  • Our neonatal intensive care unit is well known for its excellent service to treat preterm and sick newborn babies.
  • To avoid cross infection the unit is divided into septic and aseptic units. Utmost importance is given to aseptic techniques while dealing with neonates.
  • MMHRC is the only hospital in Madurai to provide surfactant therapy and ventilatory care for premature babies.
  • Prompt RDS management is important and has helped us in providing tertiary care for very sick babies and extremely premature babies.
  • The outcome of premature babies are treated with surfactant, parental nutrition and hyper bilirubinemia treated by Exchange transfusion is much better than those who are managed conservatively.
  • Our services are at par with any other well-equipped tertiary care centre in the country.
  • Ventilator care and surfactant therapy provided here has improved the survival rate of preterm babies with respiratory problems.
  • With the help of the Blood bank and free availability of blood component therapy, complicated and rare bleeding disorders, platelet disorders, thalassemia, septicemia and Haemophilia are managed successfully.
  • Exchange transfusions have saved many newborn with Rh haemolytic disease.


  • Super specialties in surgery, urology and plastic surgery help us to provide best treatment to children with acute surgical and urological problems and also correction for congenital anomalies.
  • Several interesting yet complicated cases and rare syndromes have been diagnosed and treated in our department successfully.
  • Our aim is to serve the poor, and our department regularly conducts free paediatric health camps on (every Saturdays) catering to children from the lower socio- economic strata.
  • Laboratory investigations are done at a concessional rate during these camps.
  • The economically deprived people are getting better access to care, through these efforts.
  • We also provide free immunization (BCG & OPV) on all working days.
