To all patients in general and the rural population around Madurai in particular, the Department of Cardiology at MMHRC provides cardiac care of truly international standards. Our committed critical care units and a fine team of cardiologists on-call at all times of day ensure that expert care is given to each patient. The department features 24-hours emergency care, best-in-class diagnostic and medical equipment, qualified specialists, innovative treatment methods and excellent patient care.

We’re well-enabled to:

  • Perform acute myocardial infarction (MI) and management for primary PCI
  • Attend to cases of congestive heart failure
  • Offer round-the-clock management for acute cardiac cases
  • Perform Electrophysiological studies and RFablation



The Cardiology department employs the most updated medical and diagnostic equipment and continuously endeavours to upgrade the skills of its personnel in order to keep abreast of international standards in cardiac care. Below is a glimpse of some of the facilities and equipment we provide.


Our specialized Cardiac Catheterization Lab from GE Innova 200 flat panel and Siemens medical system incorporation enables us to perform various diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures with excellent outcomes. With the support of the cardiothoracic surgical team, which provides surgical standby support during interventional procedures, we carry out variously closed and open heart procedures including valve replacement and coronary bypass surgery (CABG).

We provide primary PTCA in acute myocardial infarction, along with other cardiac procedures including:

  • Angioplasty
  • CAD
  • Pacemakers
  • Balloon mitral valvotomy and ASD device
  • PDA coil closure for congenital heart disease
  • Electrophysiological studies & RFablation


  • Two newly built Coronary Intensive Care Units
  • 12 beds equipped with monitors and ventilators for critically ill patients
  • Special wards and general wards for stable patients

Other equipments available include,

  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) for critically ill patients
  • ACT machine to assess clotting time during angioplasty
  • Transesophageal echo (TEE)
  • Thallium or Techniturn Study for Nuclear Cardiac Imaging
