The department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Meenakshi Mission Hospital continues to march ahead in providing excellent care to patients for cardiothoracic diseases, with improved efficiency and quality.
The total number of cases done from 2003 to 2014 is 5116.
This covers the entire gamut of cardiothoracic surgery including Coronary Bypass surgery, Valvular heart surgery, Congenital cardiac surgery and Thoracic and vascular surgery.
In Coronary Revascularisation surgery the main emphasis is on Beating Heart CABG because of significant reduction in morbidity and cost.
About 90% of our coronary revascularisation has been done on a beating heart.
We emphasize on total arterial revascularisation to achieve better patency rate of the grafts.
We undertake all high-risk cases like those with low ejection fraction, ventricular aneurysm, concomitant carotid stenosis and ischemic mitral regurgitation.
Valvular Heart Disease
In Valvular heart disease, apart from routine valve replacement, valve repair and Atrial Fibrillation ablation (Maze Operation) are also being done.
Valve repairs by experienced surgeons have been found to offer substantial advantage over replacements in terms of lowering the valve related complications.
We, in our department also offer valve repair to suitable patients and have shown good results.
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is routinely performed by our cardiac anaesthesiologists, who provide valuable support with encouraging results to the cardiac surgical team.
A good number of patients in the below poverty line segment have benefited from our institution.
Congenital Heart Surgery
- In Congenital heart surgery, the common operations like ASD, VSD and PDA are being done routinely.
- We have also performed high-risk complex operations like Total Correction of Tetrology of Fallot.
- In keeping with the latest trends in surgery, minimal invasive techniques are being increasingly applied.
Thoracic & Vascular Surgeries
The number of thoracic and vascular surgeries done, also contribute much to the quality outcome of the department.
We have successfully performed Pulmonary Thrombo-endarterectomy on a patient with chronic Pulmonary Thromboembolism for the first time in Southern Tamilnadu. This is a fairly common problem in our community, largely misdiagnosed and often ignored.
This new modality of treatment offers a re-birth to these moribund patients.
We hope to increase our experience in this novel operation in future.
Our surgical successes have been very gratifying with internationally acceptable results. Even in Emergency operations performed on patients with Cardiogenic shock, the department had shown good results.
We are one of the few units in the country offering Endoscopic Vein Harvesting Technology to our patients at an affordable cost.
The Operation theatre dedicated to Cardiothoracic surgery is a state-of- the- art facility with a seam-less stainless steel cladding of the walls, Laminar airflow and a separate Air-handling Unit for this theatre only.
- All these facilities help to reduce the infection rate to zero.
- There is a ten-bedded ICU with all the latest gadgets available, comparable to the most developed centres in India.
- We have 3 Intra-aortic balloon pumps to salvage patients with Myocardial Infarction in Cardiogenic shock.
- An Endoscopic Tower has been procured for Endoscopic Vein harvesting.
The future looks very encouraging. We, in the Department of Cardiothoracic Sugery, MMHRC, share the dreams of our Founder Chairman to perform Heart Transplantation and key-hole Robotic Cardiac surgery before long, in our Institution.
