29th September, 2015, Madurai – On the occasion of World Heart Day, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre organized a special Heart Checkup Camp, followed by an Awareness meet. Over 250 members of the public availed the checkup and stayed through the awareness program and presentations, following which, lunch was served at 1:00PM.

The speakers of the program included eminent heart specialists of MMHRC, Dr. Sivakumar, Dr.Sampath Kumar, Dr.Ganesan and resident Diabetologist, Dr.Mahesh Babu. The doctors spoke in detail about good and bad habits that could help prevent or lead to heart disease respectively.

India leads the world in deaths due to heart attack among individuals aged between 35 – 50 years. This is an alarming statistic and is chiefly caused by unhealthy lifestyle and eating habits. Sedentary lifestyle, in which an individual sits for more than three hours at a stretch makes one three times more susceptible to heart disease. According to heart specialists across the world, both smoking and drinking are a strict no-no, when it comes to heart health. There are over 4000 carcinogens in cigarettes and alcohol is one of the main reasons for the inflammation of arteries, which leads to heart attacks.

Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease among Indian men and women.

All speakers unanimously stressed on the importance of creating awareness about heart health and heart disease among youngsters in schools and colleges.
